Is Secondary Breast Augmentation Right for Me?
At our plastic surgery practice in Decatur, breast augmentation is one of our most popular cosmetic surgery procedures. Women seek breast augmentation when they are dissatisfied with the natural shape or size of their breasts or when they have experienced a change in the shape or size of their breasts due to pregnancy or changes in body weight. At our practice, we have an overwhelming success rate with breast augmentation. However, there are a small percentage of patients who come to us because they are dissatisfied with the results of a previous breast augmentation surgery. These patients may be candidates for breast implant revision surgery at the Center for Cosmetic Medicine with Decatur plastic surgeon Stuart Baker.
Any patient who comes to our practice for plastic surgery will need to meet certain health and medical requirements. Women who are seeking breast implant revision surgery have already undergone breast augmentation so, unless their physical health has changed, they are typically good candidates for cosmetic surgery.
If the physical requirements for surgery have been met, women who make good candidates for breast implant revision surgery are those who are dissatisfied with the results of breast augmentation surgery for either cosmetic or medical reasons. Women who are dissatisfied for any of the following reasons or those who experience any of the following side effects or complications following breast augmentation may qualify for correction through breast implant revision surgery:
- Unhappy with the size of the breast implant used
- Dissatisfied with the type of breast implant used (silicone vs. saline)
- Noticeable wrinkling or creasing of the implant beneath the skin
- Implants that can be felt beneath the skin
- Implants that do not sit naturally (they are either too high or too low)
- Implants that are spaced too far apart
- An implant that has ruptured or has lost volume as a result of leaking
- Capsular contracture, a condition in which the body rejects the breast implant and forms scar tissue around it
Women who experience any of the above conditions may be good candidates for breast implant revision surgery with Dr. Baker.
Treatment Tailored to the Patient
Breast implant revision surgery is unique for every patient. Common techniques used during breast implant revision surgery include exchanging the implant for one that is a different size or type and changing the placement of the breast implant (typically from a sub glandular position to a sub pectoral position). Dr. Baker will address each patient’s case individually so that an appropriate technique can be determined for the breast implant revision surgery. All of this can be discussed with Dr. Baker at your initial surgical consultation.
