Types of Breast Implants
Silicone Implants
Silicone implants closely resemble the appearance and feel of natural breast tissue and are considered one of the best options for lifelike results. They are made up of a silicone outer shell filled with silicone gel and can be placed in patients over the age of 22. The benefit of silicone gel is its thick consistency. In case of rupture, the silicone gel is likely to remain within the shell rather than visibly collapse. Unfortunately, silicone is not a biocompatible substance, so you may risk capsular contracture (the hardening and contracting of scar tissue) with silicone implants. However, we do everything possible to reduce the chance of complications through careful planning and strategic surgical techniques.
Saline Implants
Saline breast implants consist of a silicone outer shell filled with a sterile saltwater solution. Unlike pre-filled silicone implants, saline shells are inserted into the body empty and are filled once placed. The placement technique is one of the main benefits, requiring smaller incisions and less chance of visible scarring. Saline can also be safely absorbed by the body in the case of a rupture, and these implants have a lower rate of capsular contracture. While saline implants are generally seen as less authentic-looking, some patients with modest breast tissue prefer the more rounded aesthetics. Saline implants are usually more affordable and can be placed in patients over the age of 18.
Are You a Candidate?
Candidates for a breast augmentation procedure meet the following criteria:
Good Health
To qualify for a breast augmentation, patients should be healthy, non-smokers, and free of any medical conditions that could lead to potential complications during plastic surgery.
Appropriate Age
Patients must be fully developed before considering breast augmentation. Saline implant patients must be at least 18 years of age and silicone implant patients at least 22.
No Plans to Become Pregnant
Breast augmentation is not recommended for patients who are currently pregnant or nursing. It is best to hold off on the surgery if you intend on having children in the future, as pregnancy can alter your results.
Realistic Expectations
It is important for patients to choose plastic surgery for the right reasons and to have realistic expectations for their results. While a breast augmentation can achieve incredible transformation, there are limitations to the procedure. For example, augmentation alone will not correct drooping or sagging breast tissue (you would need a breast lift) and should not be expected to cure you of all body insecurities.

Combining Augmentation With a Breast Lift
If you want to enhance the size or shape of your breasts, but also wish to address sagging, your surgeon can combine breast implants with a breast lift into one comprehensive procedure.
A breast lift can remove excess skin and elevate the breasts, resulting in a perkier and more youthful-looking bust. Your nipples and areolas will also be moved to a more aesthetically appealing position. During your consultation, Dr. Baker can recommend the best approach to achieving the enhancements you desire. If you're looking for a finishing touch, we also offer a range of injectables, such as BOTOX Cosmetic.
Breast augmentation is one of Dr. Baker's most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries. He has decades of experience providing patients with outstanding results.
Maintaining Your Results
Follow Aftercare Instructions
In the weeks following your breast augmentation, follow the aftercare instructions given to you by your plastic surgeon to allow your breast implants to settle and your breasts to heal properly.
Attend Follow-Up Appointments
To make your breast implants last as long as possible, attend all follow-up appointments with your plastic surgeon and constantly monitor how your breast implants look and feel. This can allow you to detect potential problems before they become severe.
Be Ready for Changes
Though a bra with adequate support can help prevent sagging, breast tissue will change over time. Meanwhile, it is inevitable that your breast implants will need to be replaced eventually. If you wish to maintain the results of your breast enhancement procedure, it's important to understand that procedures such as a breast augmentation revision or a breast lift will become necessary in the future.
Removing and Replacing Breast Implants
There are several reasons why breast implants can require removal or replacement, including:
- Implant rupture
- Implant displacement
- Implant malfunction
- Capsular contracture
- Change in taste
- Change in lifestyle
- Changes in breast tissue
