Dermal Fillers
What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are nonsurgical injections that help fill in your facial features and smooth your skin. Different fillers use different ingredients to achieve results. Our office offers Restylane®, JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC, and RADIESSE® fillers.
What Can
Dermal Fillers Correct?
/
Dermal filler injections can reduce signs of aging in the face, such as fine lines and wrinkles, lost volume, depressed scars, and thin lips.
Are Dermal Fillers Right for Me?
Dermal fillers are a popular solution and have benefited millions, but they're not right for everyone. Dr. Baker will only recommend fillers if he determines you are a good candidate. Generally speaking, dermal filler candidates:
- Are in good overall health
- Do not smoke
- Have realistic expectations
- Have the right amount of skin laxity
If you have excessive skin laxity, Dr. Baker may recommend a more invasive solution, such as a facelift, instead.

Your Dermal Filler Treatment WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR APPOINTMENT
Day of Procedure
Dermal filler appointments at our offices can take as few as 15 minutes to complete.
Dermal filler appointments at our practice serving Greater Champaign, Illinois, can take as little as 15 minutes to complete, so they can fit conveniently into your schedule.
Aftercare Recommendations
After your appointment, you can continue with your day as normal; however, there are some general instructions you should follow for the best results:
- Avoid disturbing the treatment site for several hours, as this could cause the filler to migrate to another area.
- Avoid sleeping on the treatment site for several days.
- Avoid using harsh skin products like AHAs and retinoids for 24 hours.
- Avoid wearing oil-based makeup on the treatment site for 24 hours.
- Minimize sun exposure for about 24 hours. For lasting results, use sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, wear protective clothing when in the sun, and stick to shady areas when outside.
You won't have to take any time off of work following treatment, but your fillers may result in mild adverse effects that can make it uncomfortable to be out in public for a few days.
If you are still experiencing discomfort after the first few days of your recovery, contact one of our offices in the Champaign area for assistance.

Understanding the Regular Side Effects Of Dermal Fillers
After receiving dermal fillers, patients may experience routine side effects such as:
- Bruising
- Redness
- Swelling
- Itching
- Discomfort
- Rash
When performing your dermal filler treatment, Dr. Baker will do everything he can to minimize the chances that these side effects develop. If you do happen to develop one or more of these symptoms, know that they are normal and that they should quickly improve on their own. You can use over-the-counter pain medication and cool compresses to alleviate any discomfort.
The Results of Fillers
Though fillers will plump your skin immediately, it can take about a week for your final results to become apparent.
The results from injectables like JUVÉDERM, RADIESSE, and Restylane can last as long as eighteen months to two years, but results can vary considerably from patient to patient. You may need touch-up treatments about every six to 12 months depending on the complexity of your cosmetic concerns and the location of the treatment site.
In addition to touch-up treatments, we offer other nonsurgical skin procedures that can help you achieve your rejuvenation goals.
Dermal Fillers vs. BOTOX What's the Difference?
BOTOX uses botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin that calms movement in the injection site by blocking nerve receptors in the muscle. This helps smooth wrinkles primarily in the upper half of the face, like crow's feet and forehead lines, that result from repetitive movements.
Our dermal fillers use hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxylapatite to mainly target the lower face, where wrinkles and signs of aging typically develop due to the effects of gravity and loss of volume. To target various signs of aging on your face, Dr. Baker may suggest both dermal fillers and BOTOX to meet all of your needs.
