How Does BOTOX Work?

BOTOX Cosmetic is a form of botulinum toxin that helps smooth facial lines. It works by reducing the activity of facial muscles that cause wrinkles. Though the name "botulinum toxin" may sound intimidating, it's a safe and easy treatment that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In a simple, nonsurgical treatment, lines and wrinkles can be softened, giving your face a refreshed and revitalized look. Dr. Baker and you will determine the injection sites to ensure they address the areas that concern you. BOTOX can ease signs of aging all over your face, including:

  • Forehead furrows
  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Facial lines
  • Lip lines
  • Wrinkles and lines of the lower face
  • Nostril flaring

A Safe, FDA-Approved Treatment

Since its FDA approval in 2002, botulinum toxin treatments have been used by men and women to smooth moderate to severe wrinkles. Today, it's the only product that has FDA approval to smooth frown lines, crow's feet, and forehead lines in adults. It is available at The Center for Cosmetic Medicine offices in Champaign, IL; Decatur, IL; and Monticello, IL.

Hear From a 53-Year-Old BOTOX Patient

"I love the Botox. I have these beautiful cheek bones and now those terrible smile lines around my eyes have softened. I was asked to write a testimonial for the new website. Here goes!! I contemplated a face lift for a very long time. I met with several doctors and just wasn't happy with what they suggested or how I would look afterwards. Meeting with Dr. Baker I felt comfortable. He listened to me, and that was very important to me. My look is as natural as can be. When I returned home, everyone said how great I looked, and they still do." K.B.

Who Can Benefit From BOTOX?

Most people who have wrinkles or frown lines can benefit from BOTOX. If these factors apply, you may be a good candidate for injections.

Realistic Expectations

Smoothing out wrinkles and lines with BOTOX can make you look younger and fresher. However, it's important to remember BOTOX has its limitations. If you seek a dramatic transformation, our plastic surgeon can recommend alternative procedures.

Health

Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have allergies to botulinum toxin should not get injections. You should also have healthy skin at the injection site.

Age

Patients must be age 18 or older to qualify for BOTOX Cosmetic injections.

Consultation

During your consultation at one of our Champaign-area offices, you can discuss your goals and concerns with Dr. Baker. He will ask about your medical history and conditions to determine if you're a suitable candidate for BOTOX.

Anesthesia

At your appointment, you will be seated comfortably in a reclining chair where you will receive a local anesthetic and an ice pack if you desire.

Injection

Dr. Baker will inject the botulinum toxin into the muscle at the injection site. Once injected, you won't feel pain, but you may feel some mild discomfort.

Return to Your Day

There is no downtime following BOTOX injections, so you can continue with your day as normal. In many cases, the treatment can be completed in as little as 15 minutes, making this a procedure that can comfortably fit into your schedule.

The results from your BOTOX may take a few days to appear, but it's important not to touch the injection site during this time. Doing so can cause the botulinum toxin to migrate to another area of the face. To maintain your results, you can schedule periodic treatments for BOTOX at our offices in Champaign, Decatur, or Monticello.

Seeking Enhancements But Unsure About Plastic Surgery?

It's common for people to want to change a part of their appearance so they look more youthful and attractive. Although plastic surgery from an experienced surgeon like Dr. Baker is safe and low-risk, some patients need more time to decide on such a life-changing procedure.

Injectables like BOTOX and other non-surgical treatments are a great way to see how enhancements can change your look without making a permanent commitment. Unlike plastic surgery, botulinum toxin treatment needs minimal aftercare, and lasts three to six months. While possible, complications like drooping eyelids are uncommon.

Generous Praise for Dr. Baker

"The most difficult part of this was editing my thoughts down to something of reasonable length. I have too many glowing words about Dr. Baker, all of you ladies, and my experience." A.L.

Side Effects of BOTOX Injections

BOTOX is considered a safe treatment, but it may result in minor side effects. When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon and master injector like Dr. Baker, the risk of side effects is lowered significantly. However, side effects may include:

  • Temporary drooping of the eyebrows or eyelids
  • Injection site redness, numbness, or bruising
  • Nausea
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Headache
  • Eye dryness or excessive tearing

What to Expect After Your injections

Recovering from BOTOX should only take a few days at most. Here are some aftercare tips to avoid any complications.

No Exercise

Avoid any strenuous activity for about 24 hours after your BOTOX injections. Being active will increase blood circulation, which can lead to bruising and swelling.

No Alcohol

You should avoid drinking alcohol for the first 24 hours after your treatment. Alcohol thins the blood, increasing your risk of bruising and swelling.

No Touching Your Face

Touching your face in the first 24 hours after your injection can cause the botulinum toxin to move outside of the treatment area. You should also remain upright for at least four hours after receiving BOTOX, as lying down can cause the toxin to move.

The Difference Between BOTOX and Dysport

Dysport® is another botulinum toxin widely used by plastic surgeons when patients want to reduce the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between their eyebrows. Our office uses BOTOX because it is approved to treat fine lines and wrinkles in more areas of the face. BOTOX may also last longer than Dysport.

Did You Know BOTOX Helps With Overactive Bladders?

Having an overactive bladder can be embarrassing. Making frequent trips to the bathroom can decrease your quality of life.

After an injection of botulinum toxin into the bladder, patients can experience fewer accidents and a decreased need to make bathroom visits. BOTOX can regulate overactive bladders for up to six months. Before the injection, your bladder will first be numbed with lidocaine for your comfort.

Medical conditions like allergies or a urinary tract infection may cause unintended side effects. Be sure to tell Dr. Baker about any conditions you have that could complicate treatment before your injection.

Paying for BOTOX FINANCING IS AVAILABLE

BOTOX can vastly improve your confidence by making you look and feel younger. Though your insurance won't contribute to the cost of cosmetic treatments, many patients find the results are worth the investment in themselves.

Fortunately, our offices serving the areas of Champaign, Decatur, and Monticello, IL, offer financing through CareCredit®. CareCredit allows patients to pay in affordable monthly installments so this treatment can fit comfortably into their  budget.
